On Dangerous Ground

(Nicholas Ray, 1952, 82 min, USA, in English, B/W, DVD)

-- Introduced by Prof. Michael Morton

Jim Wilson is a New York police detective who frequently abuses the suspects he arrests in order to solve his cases. After another one of these "incidents", his chief decides to send him upstate to investigate the murder of a young girl in the winter countryside. This crime drama follows Wilson and the hate-filled victim's father, Walter Brent, on a manhunt in snow-covered terrain. During the investigation, the policeman finds himself drawn to the blind sister of the prime suspect, Mary, who helps him see the mental illness of her brother. Recognizing the father's rage as a reflection of himself and inspired by the courage of the blind girl, Jim finds out the world isn't such a horrible place after all.
