Out of the Past
(Jacques Tourneur, 1947, 97 min, USA, in English, B/W, Blu-Ray)

-- Introduced by Prof. Michael Morton; Q&A to follow!

A classic tragic film noir masterpiece, Out of the Past takes the audience on a thrilling journey of treachery, betrayal and intrigue.

In his first starring role, Robert Mitchum plays Jeff Bailey, an owner of a gas station in a small town in California. He's tracked down by a man from his past who works for his former boss - Whit Sterling, and now his old life reaches out and pulls him back to the time when he used to work as a private eye out of New York.

The whole story of his real identity is revealed in a flashback during an all-night drive with Bailey's current love, Ann, to the meeting spot with Sterling at Lake Tahoe. In his investigator days, Jeff Markham, as his real name was, was hired by Sterling to find his girlfriend, Kathie Moffat who he claimed shot him and stole $40,000. However, when Jeff finally tracks her down, they fall in love and he lies that she ran away in San Francisco. But the truth could not stay hidden forever.

"'Out of the Past' should be considered a prototypical example of how to do noir the right way - shadowy corners, double crossings aplenty, a luscious femme fatale, and, of course, murders." - Film and Felt
