Film Screening & discussion:

The Woman's Film
(Louise Alaimo and Judy Smith, 1971, Black and White)

This documentary is a valuable historical document of the origins of the modern women's movement in the United States. The film delves into the lives of ordinary women from different races, educational levels and class. Filmed mostly in small consciousness-raising groups, from which the women's movement grew, the women talk about the daily realities of their lives. They speak, sometimes with hesitancy, often with passion, about the oppression of women as they see it.(twn.org)

News From Home
(Chantal Akerman, 1977, France/ Belgium/ West Germany, French with English subtitles, Color)

Letters from Chantal Akerman's mother are read over a series of elegantly composed shots of 1976 New York, where our (unseen) filmmaker and protagonist has relocated. Akerman's unforgettable time capsule of the city is also a gorgeous meditation on urban alienation and personal and familial disconnection.
