Contagion is a disaster movie with a brain and conscience. The film follows the rapid progress of a lethal airborne virus that kills within days. As the fast-moving epidemic grows, the worldwide medical community races to find a cure and control the panic that spreads faster than the virus itself. Adopting a clean, chronological and punchy approach, Soderbergh holds a steady eye on panic and chaos.

Part of a week-long series of events detailing the current outbreak of Ebola in West Africa:

Mon Sept 22, 5pm: Drs. Chris Woods and Mike Merson (Duke Global Health Institute) discuss the overall situation with the outbreak of the disease in West Africa and the response from the global community. (217 Perkins Library)

Tue Sept 23, 5pm: Dr. Mary H. Moran (Anthropology, Colgate University) speaks about the cultural context of the West African countries currently affected, especially Liberia. (Mary Lou Williams Center for Black Culture)

Wed Sept 24, 5pm: Dr. Philip Rosoff (Duke Medicine) describes the challenges of planning for a pandemic and the ethical implications of untested vaccine use. (217 Perkins Library)

Thu Sept 25, 12pm: Dr. Faisal Shuaib (Incident Manager, Ebola Emergency Operations Center in Nigeria) gives a video conference presentation from Nigeria to an audience in Trent 040 over lunch, about Nigeria’s first hand experience with managing this pandemic.
