In this long-awaited fourth feature, contemporary master Lucrecia Martel ventures into the realm of historical fiction and makes the genre entirely her own in this adaptation of Antonio di Benedetto’s 1956 novel. Set in a remote South American colony in the late 18th century, officer Zama of the Spanish crown waits in vain for a transfer order that never comes. Martel’s trademark command of sound and image is on full display, with oneiric cinematography and immersive soundwork fueling this relentlessly destabilizing portrait of colonial hubris.
