An examination of major horror subgenres alongside lesser-known works from domestic and international contexts. The course analyzes how horror reflects cultural concerns around gender, race, power, ownership and space, whether in the haunted home, the alien wilderness, or the fragile body. Students will also consider how emotions such as fear, dread, and unease are visualized through cinematic form, and how sound, image, and atmosphere are manipulated to shape the spectator's experience.
