Cinematic Arts Equipment Cage
Welcome to the Cinematic Arts Equipment Cage! You will find us in Room 126B of the Rubenstein Arts Center. To support coursework within the program, our Equipment is available to students enrolled in Cinematic Arts courses or approved Cinematic Arts Independent Studies.
We will next open for the Spring term, starting on January 22, 2026. During the semester, we are open Monday through Friday from 11:30AM to 5:30PM, and on Saturday from 12PM to 3PM.
Equipment checkouts on Thursday should be returned by Friday afternoon, while equipment checkouts on Friday are due by the following Monday morning. All other checkouts can be kept for 24 to 48 hours.
Before borrowing our equipment, you must understand your responsibilities thoroughly and submit a signed copy of our Policies & Procedures form. For questions, please contact the Cinematic Arts Cage Manager, Casey Herbert.

Production Equipment Available for Course Work
Students enrolled in Cinematic Arts classes and Cinematic Arts independent study projects have access to Cinematic Arts production equipment for class projects, including:
- Canon DSLRs (SL3, 80D, 70D, 60D, 7D)
- Sony A7iii 4K mirrorless DSLRs
- Sony A6300, A6500 mirrorless DSLRs
- Sony FX3 Cine Line Full Frame 4K camera
- Sony FX9 Cine Line Full Frame 6K camera
- Sony FS-5 & FS-5ii 4K cameras
- ​Panasonic DVX-200 4K camera
- Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Cameras
- Canon Vixia G20 HD cameras
- Bolex 16mm film cameras
- Zoom F2, H4, H5 and H6 sound recorders
- DJI Action Camera 2 and OSMO
- Rhino ARC 2 Slider
- Directional and wireless microphones for various applications
- Lighting equipment: hard and soft light kits, fresnels, LED lights, and an HMI
- Grip and camera support equipment including fluid head tripods, a doorway dolly and track, a jib and various camera mounts.
Use of equipment by persons not currently enrolled in Cinematic Arts classes or for projects that are not part of Cinematic Arts coursework is not permitted.
However, any student may check out a Canon SL3 DSLR and tripod from the Cinematic Arts equipment cage (provided by Trinity Technology Services) or a wide range of video gear from The Link at Perkins Library.
Post-Production Facilities
Students enrolled in Cinematic Arts classes have access to the editing facilities in Room 234 of the Rubenstein Arts Center, and in Smith Warehouse Bay 12, Room 228. These labs include Apple Mac Studios running Final Cut Pro X and Adobe Creative Cloud (including Premiere, After Effects, and Photoshop). The edit suite in the Legacy Lab (Smith Warehouse Bay 12, Room A121) contains 16mm bench stations and a 16mm flatbed editor, as well as a multi-format digital film scanner.
Equipment Policies & Procedures
Borrowing equipment is a student resource, not a right. Students who violate the policies outlined here may lose access to Cinematic Arts equipment.
- Equipment may be checked out and operated by students enrolled in Cinematic Arts courses after receiving training and approval from the appropriate faculty or staff.
- Equipment may not be used for personal projects or commercial activity, paid or unpaid.
- Equipment must be checked out and returned during regular Cage hours.
- Unless specifically authorized, students may only checkout one of each type of equipment (for example, one camera and one light kit).
- Unless specifically authorized, an equipment user may only check out one of each type of equipment (i.e., one camera, one light kit).
- Equipment must be returned in good condition and packed as it was received. Any issues must be reported to Cage personnel immediately.
- Students must take responsibility for repair or replacement costs if equipment is damaged or lost due to neglect.
- Equipment must always be kept secure. In the event of theft, students must file a police report and provide a copy to the Equipment Manager.
- If equipment is damaged or lost due to neglect, the student on record will be responsible for repair costs and/or replacement of missing or damaged equipment.
- Equipment may be used anywhere in the Triangle. Travel outside the Triangle may only occur with authorization from the appropriate Cinematic Arts instructor.
- Cinematic Arts equipment may be used during the Spring and Fall semesters. To use equipment during breaks, students must seek an exception with authorization from the appropriate Cinematic Arts instructor.
- Cinematic Arts equipment is a shared student resource. Students who violate these policies may lose access to the Cage and our equipment.
