Mobile Cinema: Nausicaä (1984) + Twister (1996)

Mobile Cinema’s next stop is the Durham County Main Library for an evening of film, music, and festivity. We’ll begin with a screening of Hayao Miyazaki’s epic animated masterpiece Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind (1984) in the library’s indoor theater. After Nausicaä, take a break to enjoy live music, food, drinks, sweets and free treats outdoors. The evening closes with Jan de Bont’s live-action blockbuster Twister (1996). Join us on a cinematic journey exploring human resilience in the face of environmental disaster and the pursuit of balance and a sustainable world.

Event Schedule

5:00-6:45 PM: Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind (1984) screening indoors.
7:00-8:30 PM: Intermission with food trucks, free treats and live music outside.
8:30-10:30 PM: Twister (1996) screening in the outdoor amphitheater.

Important Event Information: The screenings are free and open to the public. No tickets or reservations are required, but seating is limited and available on a first-come, first-served basis. Cushions and picnic blankets are encouraged for hillside lawn seating during the outdoor screening of Twister.

Pets are not allowed. Food and drinks will be available for purchase on site. The seating area will open at least 30 minutes prior to the start of the event. Free parking is available on site. Parking decks and street parking are available downtown for additional parking.

In the event of inclement weather, screenings and activities will be held indoors. Check this page for updates.

Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind

Written and directed by Academy Award®-winner Hayao Miyazaki, the film is an epic masterpiece of sweeping scope and grandeur that remains one of the most breathtaking and exhilarating animated films of all time.

A thousand years after the Seven Days of Fire destroyed civilization, warring human factions survive in a world devastated by atmospheric poisons and swarming gigantic insects. The peaceful Valley of the Wind is nestled on the edge of the Toxic Forest and led by the courageous Princess Nausicaä, whose love of all living things leads her into terrible danger, as she fights to restore balance between humans and nature. Featuring the voices of Alison Lohman, Uma Thurman, Patrick Stewart, Edward James Olmos and Shia LaBeouf.

Twister
(Jan de Bont, 1996, 113 min, USA, in English, Color, Digital)

Academy Award winner Helen Hunt stars as Dr. Jo Thornton-Harding, who as a small girl watched her father sucked to his death from her family’s storm cellar by a massive tornado. Now a storm chaser, a scientist who risks her life to study the dark side of nature by taking her data-transmitting instruments directly into the path of a deadly storm, Jo chases the largest tornado ever to strike Oklahoma as her marriage implodes and rival scientists will stop at nothing to steal her breakthrough. Go for the ride of your life with this blockbuster from executive producer Steven Spielberg, director Jan de Bont (Speed) and writer Michael Crichton (Jurassic Park).

About Mobile Cinema:

This event is the second of three community-focused outdoor film screenings planned for 2023, all free to the public, and held in various Durham locations. Mobile Cinema screenings began during the pandemic, when Screen/Society, the Duke Cinematic Arts screening series, moved outdoors with support from Duke Arts. As we reemerge and reengage with the social side of the cinematic experience, MOBILE CINEMA is designed to serve as an affirmation of the community-building function of art and a demonstration of how images and stories are vitally interwoven with everyday life and history.
